Talking Out of Turn
Many students exhibit behavior in which they talk out of turn. Listed are a few ways in which the teacher may handle this situation:
-Give students time to talk. This may be done in partner work or by having them participate in the think-pair-share strategy.
-Have a signal to quiet students. This may include a bell or noise maker of some sort. Teachers commonly have claps, songs, or phrases to signal the students.
-Assigning special roles for talkers may give them the opportunity they need to speak in class. For example, let them be the presenter in small group work.
-A positive reinforcement, such as a token economy, will encourage students to remain quiet when necessary. They will be rewarded for staying quiet when it is expected.
-Students enjoy talking. It is important that there is time to talk (group work, class discussion, etc.) and a time not to talk (teacher instruction, modeling).
