Positive Behavior Support
Positive Behavior Support, PBS, is a proactive approach to maximize academic performance and minimize problem behaviors. It aims at prevention and intervetion to keep schools safe and effective. PBS is a school wide intervention program, allowing each and every staff member to acknowledge and correct behaviors using the same approach. PBS systematically teaches appropriate behavior and is intended to structure for success, with a desire for self-management from the student.
PBS, similar to RTI, uses a three tier intervention system considering the student's behavior as well as academics. As you travel through the tiers, intervention becomes more targeted and intense. In tier 1, expectations are universal and school-wide. Everyone is aware of the proactive approach and it applies to all students. In tier 2, some students, usually considered "at-risk", are targeted. It is a smaller group of students who have targeted goals for success and development. In tier 3, the intervention is much more intense. This tier targets an individual's specific needs and their specific behavior plan. It is here that the Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) is incorporated.
