Michigan’s Integrated Behavior and Learning Support Initiative
Michigan's Integrated Behavior and Learning Support Initiative (MiBLSi) is a project designed by the Michigan Department of Education to help schools develop schoolwide support systems in reading and behavior. Research has found correlations between reading and behavior. Typically, students who have difficulty with reading usually cause classroom management issues. The goal of MiBLSi is to address both these issues simultaneously.
Similar to RTI and PBS, MiBLSI implements a multi-tiered model. The Universal, first, tier includes core programs and strategies for all students within the school building in order to promote successful outcomes and prevent school failure. The Secondary, second, tier includes programs and strategies based on identified needs of students placed here. The tertiary, third, tier is the most intensive. These programs and strategies are described as intensive programs that are highly individualized based on a student's specific needs. The multi-tiered model provides instructions for implementation. Next, evaluation must occur. MiBLSi asks schools to collect and submit data to evaluate the effectiveness of project activities in schools using Response to Intervention, and also to use data for continuous improvement process. Finally, after implementation and evaluation, it is important to remember that MiBLSi created a support system in order to support teachers and administrators throughout these processes.
