Life Space Crisis Intervention
Life Space Crisis Intervention, LSCI, is a therapeutic strategy used with students with self-defeating behaviors to help turn a crisis situation into a learning opportunity. This strategy allows students to use a crisis situation to their advantage; to learn from it, grow from it, and seek change. LSCI does not involve physical intervention. Rather, it provides steps to assist the student in behavior management and problem-solving. These 6 steps must occur immediately after the behavior occurs:
Step 1 Student Crisis- In this step, the staff member, most likely the teacher, tries to calm the student down or "drain off" all of the anger or frustration they may be feeling. The staff member should give the student space, provide supportive statements, and show empathy once the student has calmed down.
Step 2 Student Time Line- The staff member seeks the perception of the crisis by asking question and using relationship skills.
Step 3 Student Central Issue- The staff member asks the student questions to determine what the central issue, or reason, may be for the problem behavior.
Step 4 Student Insight- The staff member asks the student to think through the situation to identify the behavior and how they might learn from it.
Step 5 Student New Skills- The staff member and student discuss new social skills to overcome the self-defeating behavior.
Step 6 Student Transfer of Training- The staff member helps the student reinforce and generalize the new social skills.
