Homesickness
Typically, students in K-2 education become very homesick. Homesickness can distract students and make learning very difficult. Here are a few suggestions for handling homesickness:
-Keep the kids distracted. Homesickness occurs most frequently when children have gaps and time to think about home. Be organized to keep information and activities coming. Let the activities be fun and something they don't get to do at home.
-Let student write a letter home to a family member.
-Keep pushing time back. Ask them to tell you how they feel after math, after lunch, after recess, etc.
-Put a heart stamp on the back of their hand that they can place to their heart when they think of home.
-Let parents write a letter or send a picture that students can place in their desks.
-Give "homesick medicine" if nothing seems to work.
